Chapter 9 - The Begging

Three days later, Clara was sitting in the sunroom of the Montgomery estate, reviewing blueprints for a new medical wing she was funding at the local hospital. The estate was peaceful, filled with light and the quiet hum of productivity.

A security guard knocked gently on the glass door.

"Ma'am, there is a woman at the front gate. An Eleanor Trent. She is crying and refusing to leave."

Clara sighed, setting her pen down. "Let her in. Escort her to the foyer, please."

Clara walked down the grand hallway to the front of the house. Eleanor was standing on the marble floor, looking entirely undone. Her hair was a mess, her expensive suit was wrinkled, and the arrogant sneer she had worn for ten years was replaced by sheer terror.

When she saw Clara, Eleanor literally fell to her knees.

"Clara! Please!" Eleanor sobbed, reaching out. "You have to help us. Harrison lost everything. They repossessed his penthouse this morning. The bank is foreclosing on my house because he used it as collateral for his business loans! We have nothing. We’re ruined."

Clara stood a few feet away, looking down at the woman who had made her life a living hell. She remembered the dinners where Eleanor would "accidentally" spill red wine on Clara's cheap dresses. She remembered the snide comments about Clara's working-class mother.

"I'm sorry, Eleanor," Clara said, her voice perfectly polite but entirely impenetrable. "But I don't see how this is my concern."

"You're family!" Eleanor wailed, tears ruining her expensive makeup. "You took his company! You have billions! You could write a check and save my home and you wouldn't even notice the money!"

Clara tilted her head. "A decade is more than enough time to realize when an anchor is dragging you to the bottom, Eleanor. I finally accept that I belong in a completely different class."

Eleanor choked on a sob, realizing Clara was repeating the exact words Harrison had used to destroy her.

"You begged Harrison to leave me," Clara said softly. "You got exactly what you wanted. You are free of me. Security will show you out."

Clara turned and walked back toward the sunroom, ignoring the sound of Eleanor's desperate sobbing echoing in the grand foyer.
