Harrison stared at her, the blood roaring in his ears. "You can't do this. I built this firm from nothing! It's my life!"

"You threw away your life for a seat at a table you couldn't afford," Clara said quietly.

"Richard," Harrison begged, turning to the older man. "You can't let her do this. I’m marrying your daughter!"

Richard Dupont slowly closed his briefcase. He looked at Harrison with complete disgust.

Harrison’s world imploded. He couldn't breathe. He looked around the room, realizing that every single thing he had sacrificed his marriage for—the status, the wealth, the approval of the elite, the beautiful young fiancé—was gone.

"You have until five o'clock, Harrison," Clara said, standing up. She didn't gloat. She didn't scream. She executed the corporate kill with the exact ruthlessness he had always claimed she lacked.

She walked out of the room, her heels clicking rhythmically on the hardwood, leaving Harrison alone in the dark.
