Chapter 4 - The Phoenix Rises

While Harrison panicked, Clara was undergoing a metamorphosis.

She stood in the center of the Montgomery Estate—a sprawling, breathtaking antebellum mansion surrounded by ancient oak trees and Spanish moss. The house was a fortress of quiet luxury, filled with the warmth of Beatrice’s memory.

Nathaniel Reed sat on a velvet sofa, going over the final transition documents.

"The divorce is finalized," Nathaniel said, tapping his tablet. "The ink is dry. The waivers are legally binding. Harrison Trent has absolutely no legal avenue to touch a single dime of the Montgomery estate."

Clara turned away from the massive bay window. She was no longer wearing beige cardigans. She wore a tailored, slate-blue pencil skirt and a crisp silk blouse. Her hair, usually tied back in a rushed ponytail, fell in soft, professional waves around her shoulders. She looked like a woman who owned the room. Because she did.

"Good," Clara said, walking over and pouring them both a cup of Earl Grey tea from Beatrice’s silver service set. "What is the status of Trent Investments' aggressive expansion?"

Nathaniel allowed himself a rare, predatory smile. "They are bleeding, Clara. Harrison leveraged his firm heavily to impress Richard Dupont. He took out massive short-term loans, betting everything on acquiring your riverfront properties. Without that land, he can't build the commercial towers. Without the towers, Dupont pulls his funding. If Dupont walks, Trent Investments defaults on their loans within sixty days."

Clara took a sip of her tea, the warmth spreading through her chest. For ten years, she had watched Harrison crush small businesses, evict families from historic homes, and prioritize profit over human decency.

"He sent another offer this morning," Nathaniel noted, swiping his tablet. "Twenty-five million for the riverfront blocks. Addressed to Phoenix Holdings."

Clara set her teacup down. The delicate clink of porcelain echoed in the grand room.

"Reject it," Clara instructed smoothly. "And draft a formal notice from the Montgomery Board. We are putting a permanent preservation easement on the riverfront blocks. No commercial high-rises will ever be built there."

Nathaniel nodded, his eyes gleaming with respect. "He is going to lose his mind, Clara."

"I know," she said softly. "It’s time to introduce him to the CEO of Phoenix Holdings."
