Chapter 4 - The Thawing of Ice

Two weeks passed.

The transition from a freezing, roach-infested apartment to a billionaire's fortress was a shock to Clara's system. But what shocked her more was the man who owned it.

The city knew Dante Caruso as a monster. Clara only saw a protector.

Leo, entirely unfazed by the intimidating guards and the massive mansion, took a fast liking to Dante. One rainy afternoon, Clara walked into the grand library to find Dante—the ruthless head of the Italian syndicate—sitting on the floor in a bespoke tailored suit, helping a five-year-old build a massive Lego tower.

"You need a structural support here, Leo," Dante said seriously, pointing to a plastic red brick. "Otherwise, the foundation collapses. Always secure the foundation."

"Like a fortress?" Leo beamed.

"Exactly like a fortress."

Clara leaned against the doorframe, a soft smile playing on her lips. Dante looked up, catching her eye. For the first time since she met him, a genuine, unguarded smile broke across his face. It fundamentally changed him, wiping away the cold killer and revealing a devastatingly handsome, deeply lonely man.

"He's got an architectural mind," Dante said, standing up and brushing his knees.

"He's got a vivid imagination," Clara countered, stepping into the room.

The chemistry between them had been building, a slow, electric burn that neither dared to address. Dante provided everything—food, shelter, safety, medical care—but he never crossed a line. He treated Clara with a fierce, almost reverent respect.

"Dinner is in an hour," Dante said, stepping close to her. He reached out, his knuckles lightly grazing her cheek, tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear. His touch sent a shockwave of heat down her spine. "Wear the blue dress Maria bought you. It matches your eyes."

Clara swallowed hard, her heart pounding. "Okay."

That night, they ate by candlelight in the formal dining room. They talked not about the mafia, or the debts, or the danger outside the walls, but about art, childhoods, and dreams.

But outside the fortress, the wolves were gathering.
