Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary

The Caruso Estate was a fortress hidden in the wealthy, forested outskirts of the city. High stone walls, wrought-iron gates, and armed guards patrolling the perimeter with silent, lethal efficiency.
Clara sat in the backseat of the sedan, holding a sleeping Leo tightly against her chest. The little boy had slept through the frantic packing at the apartment.
When the car pulled up to the grand entrance of the mansion, Dante stepped out and opened her door. The sheer scale of the house was overwhelming—marble pillars, sweeping staircases, and immaculate gardens.
"Mr. Caruso," Clara whispered as he led them inside. "We don't belong here. We're just going to track mud on your floors."
Dante stopped in the massive foyer. He looked at Clara, his dark eyes softening in a way that terrified his own men.
"This house has been empty for a very long time, Clara," he said quietly. "It could use a little mud."
He led them to the East Wing. The guest suite was larger than Clara’s entire apartment building. A massive king-sized bed, a roaring fireplace, and a connecting room specifically set up for a child.
"My housekeeper, Maria, has stocked the fridge and bought clothes in your sizes," Dante said, lingering in the doorway. "There is a private doctor on staff. He will examine Leo tomorrow to ensure his medication is optimal. You are safe here. Nobody can touch you."
Clara laid Leo on the plush mattress, covering him with a down comforter. She turned back to Dante, the emotional exhaustion finally breaking her defenses.
"Why are you doing this?" she asked, tears spilling down her cheeks. "You're... you're a mob boss. You kill people. Why did you buy that laptop? Why did you save us?"
Dante looked at the floor, the shadows of his past flickering across his sharp features.
"When I was six years old," Dante murmured, his voice tight, "my mother couldn't afford my asthma medication. She pawned her wedding ring. But she was mugged on the way to the pharmacy. She came home with nothing, bleeding, and sat on the floor holding me while I couldn't breathe. I promised myself that if I ever had power, I would never let the world break a mother like that again."

He looked up, meeting her eyes. "I saw you at that counter, Clara. I saw her. Get some sleep."
He closed the door, leaving Clara in the warm, safe glow of the firelight.
