Chapter 8 - The Blackout

The banquet was in full swing when the lights died.
It wasn't a flickering brownout; it was a sudden, absolute plunge into pitch blackness that silenced the string quartet instantly. The heavy velvet drapes covering the two-story windows blocked out even the moonlight, turning the grand ballroom into a sensory void.
For two seconds, there was only the sound of confused murmurs and the clinking of crystal glasses. Then, the distinct, terrifying sound of automatic weapons being cocked echoed from the service corridors.
"Nobody move!" a harsh voice shouted from the darkness.
Elena’s survival instincts took over before her brain could form a thought. She dropped to her knees on the polished marble floor, her silk gown tearing around her ankles as she blindly grabbed for Leo and Mia. She found Mia’s trembling arm first, pulling the girl securely against her chest, then reached out and caught Leo’s velvet collar, dragging him down beneath the heavy oak shelter of the buffet table.
"Elena, I'm scared," Leo whimpered, his small body vibrating with terror.
"Shh, face into my shoulder, baby. Don't look up," she breathed, covering both their heads with her arms.
In the center of the ballroom, all hell broke loose.
Muzzle flashes illuminated the pitch blackness in brief, blinding strobes of yellow and white light. The deafening roar of gunfire bounced off the vaulted ceilings, accompanied by the shattering of mirrors and the screams of high-society guests scrambling for cover. It was a coordinated breach—an assassination squad had bypassed the outer perimeter and infiltrated the main house during the blackout.
Through the chaos and flashing strobe-light of gunfire, Elena saw a figure moving with terrifying, systematic efficiency toward the buffet table.
It was Julian.
He had discarded his tuxedo jacket; his white shirt was luminous in the muzzle flashes. He held a high-capacity sidearm in each hand, firing with surgical, lethal precision into the shadows of the service doors. Every time his weapons barked, an assailant dropped. He wasn't retreating toward the secure exits like the other syndicate bosses; he was advancing directly toward the corner where Elena and the twins were hidden.
"Thomas!" Julian roared over the gunfire, his voice cutting through the pandemonium like a foghorn. "Secure the south corridor! Cover the table!"
A tall sentry materialized from the gloom, firing a tactical carbine to suppress the doorway while Julian slid across the marble floor on his knees, ducking beneath the oak buffet table beside Elena.
He smelled of cordite, ozone, and sheer adrenaline. He didn't ask if she was okay; his large hands immediately swept over the children, verifying they were untouched, before his grip locked onto Elena’s upper arm with bruising force.
"The backup generators have been sabotaged from the internal electrical room," Julian hissed in her ear, his breath hot against her cheek. "This wasn't an external breach. Someone let them through the tunnels."
"Marcus," she breathed, her heart pounding violently in her throat. "He told me this afternoon... he said he knew how the school blueprints were leaked."

Julian’s eyes flashed in the darkness—a cold, terrifying realization settling into his sharp features. But before he could respond, a heavy string of automatic fire ripped through the oak table above their heads, showering them in wood splinters and shattered porcelain.
"We move," Julian commanded, grabbing Leo with one arm while hoisting Mia into his shield-like embrace. "Elena, grab my belt. Do not let go. We're going to the safe room."
