Chapter 19 - The New Contract

One month later, the Weston estate was unrecognizable from the weaponized fortress Elena had originally stepped into. The heavy velvet drapes that blocked the sunlight in the formal dining rooms had been permanently removed, allowing the bright, golden light of the late autumn sun to flood across the polished marble floors.

The armed sentries no longer patrolled the interior hallways with tactical carbines; they remained discreetly at the outer perimeter gates, leaving the house itself quiet, peaceful, and filled with the sound of children playing.

On a Friday afternoon, Elena sat on the stone terrace overlooking the estate gardens, watching Leo and Mia run across the green lawn with a golden retriever puppy Julian had brought home from a rescue shelter the previous weekend. She was dressed in a comfortable cream-colored sweater and jeans, reading a medical update from Clara’s recovery rehabilitation center in Montreal, where her sister was already walking three miles a day without assistance.

The French doors of the terrace slid open.

Julian stepped out into the sunlight, carrying two crystal glasses of iced tea. He wore a simple navy polo shirt and trousers, looking ten years younger than the brooding, blood-stained phantom she had met on her first night in the foyer. The harsh, cruel lines around his mouth had softened entirely, replaced by the relaxed, confident demeanor of a man who was no longer fighting a war inside his own mind.

He set the glasses down on the wrought-iron table and took a seat in the chair directly opposite her. In his hand, he carried a thick, blue-backed legal document.

"What is that?" Elena asked, eyeing the folder curiously as she took a sip of her tea.

"It is an administrative matter that requires our immediate attention," Julian said, his stormy gray eyes locking onto hers with a quiet, intense gravity. He laid the document onto the table and slid it across to her.

Elena read the embossed title on the cover: FORMAL TERMINATION OF DOMESTIC EMPLOYMENT CONTRACT AND RELEASE OF LIABILITY.

Her heart did a sudden, terrifying flutter in her chest. She looked up at him, her knuckles turning white around her iced tea glass. "You're... you're terminating my contract? You want me to leave?"

"I am terminating your employment, Elena," Julian said softly, leaning forward with his elbows resting on his knees so he was inches from her face. "Because it is no longer appropriate for the woman who saved my children's lives—and who restored my own soul—to reside in this house as a paid subordinate."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a second document, laying it directly over the termination notice. This one wasn't a standard domestic contract. It was a formal legal petition for joint legal guardianship and adoption rights for Leo and Mia Marchesi, listing Elena Rostova as the primary co-parent alongside Julian.

"When I hired you three months ago," Julian murmured, his deep voice vibrating with a profound, raw vulnerability that took her breath away, "I told you that you could not leave this house without my permission. Today, I am asking you to stay—not for fifteen thousand dollars a month, not for room and board, and not out of obligation to a contract."

He reached across the table, his large, scarred hand gently covering both of hers where they rested on the legal papers.

"I am asking you to stay because this house is empty without you," Julian whispered, his eyes searching hers with complete, absolute devotion. "I am asking you to stay because my children need their mother. And because I cannot imagine waking up in this world for a single day without you by my side. Will you share this life with me, Elena? Truly?"

Tears of pure, overwhelming joy spilled over her eyelashes. She didn't look at the adoption papers or the financial disclosures; she looked at the man who had torn down his walls and burned his enemies to keep her safe.

May you like

She turned her hand over, interlocking her fingers tightly with his.

"Yes," she whispered, a radiant smile breaking across her face as he leaned across the table to wipe her tears away. "Yes, Julian. I'll stay forever."
