Chapter 18 - Reconstruction

When Elena threw the deadbolt and pulled the mahogany door open, the hallway was completely empty of violence. Thomas and two sentries had already removed Marcus’s body from the corridor, leaving only a faint damp patch on the Oriental rug where the underboss had fallen.
Julian stood alone on the threshold.
He had discarded his overcoat and tactical gear; he wore his simple white shirt, the sleeves rolled to his elbows, his hands washed clean of blood and gunpowder. He looked exhausted, the adrenaline draining from his frame to leave behind the deep, human weariness of a man who had just systematically cleansed his own home of betrayal.
Before Julian could even speak a word, Leo and Mia squeezed past Elena’s skirts from the corner of the room. They didn't hesitate; they ran across the threshold and launched themselves directly into their father’s arms.
Julian dropped to his knees on the hardwood floor instantly, catching both children in a crushing, protective embrace that lifted them entirely off the rug. He buried his face between their necks, his broad shoulders shaking slightly as he held them against his chest with a fierce, possessive desperation that stripped away every remaining ounce of the syndicate phantom.
"I've got you," Julian murmured into their hair, his deep voice thick with unshed tears. "You're safe now. I promise you, nobody will ever frighten you in this house again."
"Elena protected us, Dad!" Leo cried out, his small arms wrapped tightly around his father’s neck. "She locked the door and held the big bronze horse! She didn't let the bad man in!"
Julian looked up from his children’s curls, his stormy gray eyes locking onto Elena where she stood leaning against the doorframe, her legs trembling from the aftermath of the siege.
He didn't say thank you. He didn't offer a bonus check or a corporate commendation. He slowly stood up, keeping Mia resting securely on his left hip while his right arm reached out, pulling Elena firmly into the circle of his embrace alongside Leo.
He pressed her forehead against his shoulder, his chin resting on the crown of her hair as he wrapped his family together in a single, unbroken unit in the doorway of the nursery.
"The Barone syndicate has been completely neutralized by my captains on the North Side this afternoon," Julian whispered into her ear, his breath warm and steady against her skin. "And Mrs. Gable was escorted off the property by federal authorities an hour ago for financial embezzlement and complicity in Marcus’s communication leaks. The rot is gone, Elena. The house is clean."
Elena closed her eyes, letting the solid, unyielding warmth of his chest support her weight as the tension that had gripped her spine for months finally dissolved into tears of absolute relief.
"My sister..." she whispered against his shirt.

"Is sitting up in her bed at the clinic eating cherry gelatin," Julian replied, a soft, genuine smile touching his lips as he kissed the top of her head. "I spoke to her chief surgeon twenty minutes ago while Thomas cleared the foyer. The kidney transplant is scheduled for next Tuesday morning, with the top specialist in North America performing the procedure. She is going to make a complete, full recovery."
For the first time since she had walked into the attorney’s office in downtown Boston three months ago, Elena Rostova looked out into the hallway of the Marchesi estate and saw no shadows, no weapons, and no monsters lurking in the corners. She saw only a home waiting to be rebuilt.
