Emily was hyperventilating, the toxic air already taking a toll on her weakened system. I had to think like the engineer I used to be before I became a billionaire.
"Em, cover your face with a wet towel!" I shouted, sprinting to the bathroom. I grabbed my heavy steel shaving stand. The smart windows were made of impact-resistant glass, designed to withstand a Category 5 hurricane. Smashing them was impossible. I tore the wall paneling off with my bare hands, ignoring the splinters driving into my skin. I exposed the wiring for the keypad. Grabbing a lamp cord, I stripped the wires with my teeth, tasting copper and blood. I jammed the live wire into the smart-lock’s motherboard.

I scooped Emily into my arms and ran down the hallway, gasping for clean air. We were out, but the nightmare wasn't over.
