Chapter 4 - A Mother's Blindness

I couldn't go to the police yet; I needed airtight proof to ensure this woman never saw the outside of a cell. I took high-resolution photos of everything and silently retreated, securing the trapdoor exactly as I found it.

When Emily returned, I intercepted her in the master suite, locking the heavy mahogany door behind us.

“Arthur? What are you doing here? You're supposed to be in New York!” she gasped, dropping her gym bag.

“Emily, you need to sit down,” I said gently, guiding her to the edge of the bed. I showed her the photos. I watched the color drain from her face as she looked at the vials, the forged custody papers, and the ledger detailing her father’s murder.

“No,” she stammered, tears spilling over. “She’s difficult, but she’s my mother... she wouldn't...”

“She’s been putting it in your morning tea,” I said, my voice thick with rage and sorrow. “That’s why you’ve been fainting. Emily, she’s trying to kill you to get to Chloe and the money.”

Emily shattered. Years of emotional abuse and manipulation crashed down on her all at once. But as she wept, a fierce, maternal fire ignited in her eyes. "We have to get Chloe. We have to leave right now."

Just as she spoke, the power in the master suite abruptly cut out. The heavy electronic locks on our bedroom door clicked, turning red.
