“Going somewhere?” Beatrice’s voice crackled through the intercom system.

I cursed. She must have seen me on a hidden camera I’d missed in the pool house. Beatrice had hijacked my estate’s smart-home network.

“You’re a clever boy, Arthur,” Beatrice purred smoothly. “But you shouldn't have missed your flight. Now, you and Emily are going to have a tragic domestic dispute. The police will find a murder-suicide in a locked room. Such a shame. Little Chloe will need her grandmother more than ever.”

“Where is my daughter, Beatrice?!” I roared, slamming my fist against the reinforced door.

“She’s right here with me, watching the monitors,” Beatrice replied coldly. “Say goodbye to Mommy and Papa, Chloe.”

I heard a muffled sob over the speaker before the line went dead.

The ventilation fans in our room suddenly shut off, and I heard the faint hiss of gas entering through the AC vents. She was using the estate's fire-suppression halon gas system to suffocate us. We had less than ten minutes before the oxygen was depleted.
