Chapter 9 - The Execution of Justice

The abandoned shipyard was freezing, the air thick with the smell of rust and salt.

Arthur Sterling was already there, shivering in an expensive overcoat that suddenly looked far too big for him. When Julian’s armored SUV pulled up and the headlights illuminated the warehouse, Arthur fell to his knees, raising his hands in surrender.

Julian stepped out of the vehicle first. The shadows seemed to bend around him, his presence radiating pure, lethal intent.

"Julian, please!" Arthur sobbed, crawling forward on the filthy concrete. "The feds took my passport! My accounts are gone! I have nothing left! I’ll disappear, I swear it, just let me live!"

Julian didn't answer. He simply opened the passenger door.

Clara stepped out.

She wasn't wearing the submissive, modest clothes Arthur had forced her into for years. She wore a sharp black trench coat, her auburn hair pulled back tight, her chin raised high. She looked like a queen surveying a ruined kingdom.

Arthur’s jaw dropped. "Clara? Clara, tell him! Tell your husband to spare me! I'm your father!"

Clara walked forward, her heels clicking against the concrete, stopping just a few feet from the pathetic, weeping man who had tortured her.

"You are not my father," Clara said, her voice echoing perfectly clear in the cold air. "You are a coward. You killed Julian’s sister to cover your debts, and you broke my bones to feed your ego."

"I gave you everything!" Arthur shrieked, desperate and pathetic.

"You gave me a prison," Clara corrected coldly. She looked down at him with absolute disgust. She didn't feel fear anymore. The boogeyman was just a pathetic, broken old man groveling in the dirt. "I am not your victim anymore, Arthur. I am Clara Rossi."

She turned and walked back to the SUV, sliding into the passenger seat without looking back.

Julian stepped forward, drawing his weapon. He didn't monologue. He didn't gloat. For Sofia, and for Clara, he simply raised the gun and pulled the trigger.

The echoing crack of the gunshot signaled the end of Arthur Sterling, and the beginning of a new world.
