Chapter 1 - The Wrath of a Father

The kitchen was suffocatingly silent, broken only by the sound of Lily’s ragged breathing as Leo carried her up the cellar steps.

Beatrice followed slowly, her knees trembling so violently she had to grip the cold stone wall just to keep from collapsing entirely.

Every step sent a fresh wave of agony through her bruised legs, but she refused to stop moving until she knew the child was truly safe.

When they emerged into the bright light of the kitchen, the reality of the nightmare finally set in for everyone in the room.

Leo Rossi held his daughter against his chest like a shield, his dark eyes sweeping over the immaculate kitchen until they locked onto Victoria Kensington.

Victoria had backed herself against the marble island, her face drained of color, her perfect posture crumbling under the weight of her own actions.

She tried to speak, her lips parting to form another desperate excuse, but the pure, unadulterated hatred in Leo’s gaze paralyzed her completely.

“Leo, you have to understand, she was out of control,” Victoria stammered, her voice high and thin like a frightened bird.

Leo did not shout, nor did he move toward her, which somehow made the situation infinitely more terrifying for the woman who had thought she would one day be his wife.

“Mateo,” Leo said, his voice a low, gravelly command that seemed to vibrate through the floorboards of the massive estate.

Mateo stepped forward from the shadows of the hallway, his face an emotionless mask of lethal obedience.

“Take Miss Kensington to the front gate,” Leo ordered, his tone cold and detached, as if he were discussing taking out the weekly trash.

Victoria gasped, her manicured hands flying to her chest in absolute disbelief.

“You cannot do this to me, Leo!” she shrieked, all pretense of elegance vanishing in an instant.

“My father is the most powerful judge in Chicago, and he will ruin your entire operation if you humiliate me like this!” she threatened blindly.

Leo gently stroked his daughter’s dark hair, his focus entirely on the fragile life trembling in his arms, before he finally looked back at Victoria.

“Tell your father that if he ever looks in my direction again, I will personally ensure his career ends in a federal prison,” Leo whispered smoothly.

“And if you ever come within a hundred miles of my daughter again, Victoria, there won't be a cellar deep enough to hide you from me,” he added with deadly sincerity.

Mateo did not wait for another word, gripping Victoria by her expensive silk blouse and dragging her kicking and screaming out the front door.

The heavy oak door slammed shut, cutting off her hysterical cries and leaving the mansion in a state of hollow, echoing quiet.

Beatrice leaned against the counter, her chest heaving as the adrenaline slowly began to drain from her exhausted, battered body.

She looked down at her torn, blood-stained apron, suddenly overwhelmingly aware of her messy hair and the swollen, purple state of her fingers.

She was just a maid, a heavy, invisible woman who had stepped completely out of her lane, and now she expected to be fired.

Leo turned his intense gaze toward her, holding his precious daughter securely, and for a moment, Beatrice thought she might pass out from the sheer intimidation.

Instead of yelling, Leo took a slow, deliberate step toward her, his expression unreadable and dark.

“You fought for her,” Leo stated, and it was not a question, but a profound acknowledgment of a truth he had never noticed before.

Beatrice swallowed hard, her throat dry and aching.

“I would die for her, Mr. Rossi,” Beatrice replied quietly, the absolute honesty of her words surprising even herself.

Leo stared at her for a long, silent moment, seeing past her oversized uniform and her messy appearance to the incredible bravery underneath.

“I know,” Leo said softly, and in those two words, the entire dynamic of the Rossi household shifted forever.
