Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Reckoning

The executive conference room was in absolute chaos.
Twelve of Manhattan’s most powerful investors and board members were shouting over one another, their faces red with anxiety as they watched the stock ticker on the giant screen drop point after point.
When the heavy double doors swung open, the room fell dead silent.
Caroline walked in, her posture erect, her stride confident and unhurried.
Beside her walked Margaret Sterling.
The board members stared in utter disbelief. They all recognized Margaret—the former matriarch of the Sterling family whom they believed had retired to a quiet estate in France years ago.
"Caroline, what is the meaning of this?" shouted Charles Vance, a senior board member (and no relation to Arthur). "The CFO is in federal custody, your sister has been indicted for grand larceny, and the press is calling this the biggest corporate scandal of the decade!"
"The scandal is over, Charles," Caroline said, taking her place at the head of the massive table.
She motioned for Margaret to sit in the high-backed leather chair right next to her.
"What you are looking at," Caroline announced, her voice echoing clearly across the silent room, "is the master plan of two greedy individuals who attempted a hostile takeover through fraud, extortion, and forgery."
"The market doesn't care about family drama, Caroline!" another board member snapped. "The algorithms were compromised!"
"They were saved," Margaret spoke up, her calm, authoritative voice silencing the panicked board member instantly.
Margaret leaned forward, placing her hands flat on the polished table.
"I personally secured the physical server backups before Arthur Vance could detonate his charges," Margaret continued, her tone holding the weight of forty years of financial expertise. "The core algorithms are completely intact. The offshore shell companies have been frozen by federal authorities, and every dollar stolen from the research division will be recovered within forty-eight hours."
The board members exchanged astonished glances.
Charles Vance leaned back in his chair, staring at Margaret in shock. "Margaret... we were told you were incapacitated."
"You were lied to," Margaret said coldly. "By people who wanted to divide this family so they could steal this company. But as of today, the Sterling family is back in full control."
Caroline smiled subtly at her mother. The board was speechless.

"Effective immediately," Caroline declared, "my mother, Margaret Sterling, is returning to the board as Senior Financial Advisor. Any member of this board who wishes to sell their shares back to the family may do so today—at a steep discount."
Not a single board member raised a hand.
