Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Prodigal Son

The handcuffs clicked around Arthur’s wrists with a definitive, metallic sound.

The arrogance that had defined him for years evaporated in an instant, leaving behind a terrified, defeated man shivering in the snow.

"Caroline, wait!" Arthur pleaded as the FBI agents dragged him toward the roof door. "We're family! We have the same blood! Don't do this!"

Caroline stood motionless in the freezing wind, watching him.

"Family doesn't lock their mother in a cage," Caroline said, her voice completely devoid of emotion. "Family doesn't try to destroy everything their father built out of blind spite. You aren't my brother, Arthur. You're just a thief who got caught."

As the agents led Arthur away, Caroline turned her attention to Amanda, who was being brought up the stairs in handcuffs by two police officers.

Amanda was sobbing hysterically, her designer clothes stained with snow and tears.

"Caroline, please!" Amanda wailed, dropping to her knees on the icy ground. "He manipulated me! He told me you were going to cut me out of the family trust! I was scared! I did it for my future!"

Caroline looked down at her sister, feeling a profound sense of sadness, but zero sympathy.

"You let our mother suffer in a low-cost facility while you drank champagne in Europe," Caroline said, her voice cutting through Amanda's frantic excuses. "You used her money to buy designer clothes while she was scrubbing salt off my floor to survive. You sold your soul for pocket change, Amanda."

Margaret walked over, stepping softly through the snow until she stood right in front of her younger daughter.

Amanda looked up, her face flushed with shame. "Mom... I'm sorry... please tell them not to arrest me..."

Margaret looked at Amanda for a long time.

There were no tears in Margaret’s eyes—only a profound, crushing disappointment.

"I forgave you for taking my money, Amanda," Margaret said quietly, her words landing heavier than the snow falling around them. "I forgave you for telling me I was a burden. But I will never forgive you for trying to destroy your sister."

Margaret turned her back on Amanda and took Caroline’s arm.

"Take me home, Caroline," Margaret whispered. "I'm tired of being in the cold."

As the police officers escorted Amanda away, her cries fading into the Manhattan night, Caroline wrapped her arm around her mother, holding her tight against the biting wind.

The war for Sterling Tower was over, but the painful process of healing had just begun.
