Chapter 1 - The Lockdown

The marble lobby of Sterling Tower suddenly felt like a freezing tomb.

Caroline stared at her mother, processing the impossible words.

Her father had another son.

She turned her gaze slowly toward her sister, Amanda, who was now trembling in her expensive white designer coat.

"Is this true?" Caroline asked, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper.

Amanda took a step back, her eyes darting toward the revolving glass doors.

"Caroline, you can't listen to her!" Amanda shrieked, her voice echoing off the high ceiling.

"She is out of her mind! The dementia is making her imagine things!"

Margaret clutched her cleaning rag, her arthritic hands shaking, but her eyes remained fiercely clear.

"I am not crazy, Amanda," Margaret said quietly.

"I saw the files in the care home before you took my glasses away."

Caroline didn’t need to hear another word.

She pulled her phone from her pocket and pressed a single button connecting to the building's central security hub.

"Lock down the lobby," Caroline commanded.

"No one leaves. Not even my sister."

Instantly, the heavy steel security gates descended over the glass entrances with a loud, mechanical thud.

Amanda gasped, spinning around like a trapped animal.

"You can't do this! This is kidnapping!" Amanda yelled.

"No, it's a citizen's detention," Caroline corrected, stepping closer to her sister.

"Because if what Mom says is true, you are going to federal prison."

Just then, the VIP elevator chimed.

The doors slid open, revealing David Vance, Caroline’s trusted Chief Financial Officer.

He was wearing a tailored Italian suit, looking perfectly calm until he saw the scene in the lobby.

He saw Margaret in her cleaning uniform.

He saw the shredded, taped document in Caroline's hand.

And he saw the steel gates blocking his exit.

David’s confident smile vanished instantly.

"Caroline," David started, trying to sound professional. "What is going on here?"

Caroline looked at the man she had trusted with her billions.

She looked at the man who shared her father's eyes.

"That's exactly what you are going to tell me, David," Caroline said. "Or should I call you brother?"
