Chapter 7 - Thunder in the Fog

Before the man in the parka could take another step toward Clara, the freezing maritime fog at the open end of the alleyway was torn apart by the blinding, high-beam glare of a tactical helicopter spotlight descending rapidly over the harbor docks.
The deafening roar of rotor blades bounced off the brick warehouses, whipping the icy harbor water into a frenzy of spray and mist.
"What the hell is that?!" one of Sterling’s operatives shouted, raising his weapon toward the sky.
From the shadows of the adjacent rooftop, three laser sights cut through the fog, painting solid red dots directly onto the chests of Sterling’s men. A second later, the dark silhouette of a man dropped from the fire escape ladder twelve feet above, landing onto the wet gravel with lethal, heavy grace.
It was Julian.
He wasn't wearing a tuxedo or an overcoat. He wore tactical black body armor over a dark sweater, his face streaked with soot and rain, his eyes blazing with a terrifying, primordial fury that made him look like a god of war descending upon mortal prey. In his right hand, he held a customized Sig Sauer pistol; in his left, a combat knife.
"Montgomery!" the leader in the parka screamed, swinging his suppressed weapon toward Julian.
Julian didn't hesitate. He moved with a brutal, blinding speed that defied human reflexes. Two suppressed shots spat from his weapon with dry, deadly cracks. The man to the left of the parka collapsed instantly into the gravel, motionless.
The alleyway erupted into absolute chaos.
Gunfire echoed off the brick walls, deafening and bright. Gabriel and four of Julian’s tactical team surged into the alley from the street entrance, engaging Sterling’s remaining assassins in a ruthless, close-quarters firefight.
"Clara! Get down!" Julian roared, his voice cutting through the gunfire with absolute authority.
Clara dropped to the pavement behind the engine block of the Volvo just as a hail of 9mm rounds shattered the station wagon's windows, raining tempered safety glass over her wool coat. She covered her head, screaming as the metallic smell of blood and cordite filled the freezing harbor air.
Through the shattered windows, she watched Julian fight. He didn't take cover. He advanced through the gunfire with a terrifying, relentless momentum, firing with surgical precision until three of Sterling’s men lay dead on the wet stones.
Only the leader in the parka remained. Bleeding from a shoulder wound, the man lunged toward the Volvo, desperately trying to grab Clara by the collar to use her as a human shield.
He never touched her.
Julian tackled the man from the side, slamming him into the brick wall of the gallery with a sickening crunch of bone. The weapon clattered from the assassin's hand. Julian gripped the man by the throat, pinning him off the ground, his Sig Sauer pressed directly between the operative's eyes.
"Tell Alexander Sterling," Julian hissed, his voice vibrating with pure, unadulterated murder, "that I am coming for his head. And then tell God why you touched my wife."

Julian pulled the trigger.
The alleyway went dead silent, save for the rhythmic thumping of the helicopter blades hovering over the water. Julian dropped the lifeless body to the pavement, his chest heaving, his hands covered in blood—and then he turned slowly toward the Volvo where Clara was huddled.
