Chapter 10 - The Shattered Armor

The blizzard raged through the night, burying the windows in snowdrifts and isolating the cabin from the rest of the world.

By 3:00 a.m., the fever set in.

Julian tossed restlessly on the leather sofa, his skin burning hot to the touch despite the freezing air leaking through the cabin's timber joints. Clara didn't sleep. She sat on the floor beside him, continuously wringing out cold towels in a basin of melted snow, placing them across his forehead and chest to bring his temperature down.

In the fevered haze, the ruthless, impenetrable titan of Manhattan high society completely dissolved. Julian gripped her wrist with burning fingers, his dark eyes wide and haunted, staring at the ceiling as if seeing ghosts.

"I couldn't tell you," Julian muttered, his voice breaking, stripped of all its commanding arrogance. "Clara... I couldn't tell you in the car."

"Tell me what, Julian?" she asked softly, holding his burning hand against her cheek. "Why were you so angry at the gala? Why did you make me get out?"

"Not angry," he whispered, a tear slipping from the corner of his eye—a sight so profound and alien to Clara that it made her own breath catch. "Terrified. When Thorne approached you... my security chief whispered in my ear that our intelligence team had intercepted a live assassination order from Alexander Sterling. The order was scheduled to be executed as our Maybach exited the valet garage."

Clara froze. The warm towel slipped from her fingers into the basin. "What?"

"They had a sniper team aiming at the passenger side of our vehicle," Julian confessed, his voice shaking with the raw, agonizing memory of that night. "Thorne was trying to plant a targeting dot on your dress so the thermal scopes could track you through the tinted glass. When we got into the car... I knew that if you drove back to Long Island with me, the vehicle would be ambushed on the highway. They wanted to kill you just to watch me break."

"My God," Clara breathed, her hand coming up to cover her mouth as the horrific reality of that night finally fell into place. "Why didn't you just tell me? Why did you pick a fight?"

"Because if I told you we were being hunted, you would have panicked," Julian said, his fingers tightening around her wrist with desperate remorse. "You would have tried to call the police, or you would have insisted on staying with me in the car to fight them. I needed you out of the vehicle immediately. I needed you in a public taxi, surrounded by witnesses, moving away from the blast zone while I drew Sterling’s kill squad out onto the expressway alone."

He looked at her, his dark eyes filled with an agonizing, self-inflicted torment. "I picked the fight to break your heart, Clara. I insulted you so you would get out of the car and walk away from me. I thought... I thought a broken heart was better than a bullet through your chest. I drove around the block, fought off two surveillance cars on the FDR Drive, and sped back to the hotel awning ten minutes later to pick you up once the perimeter was clear... but you were already gone."

May you like

Clara sat in stunned silence, the tears streaming freely down her face. He hadn't abandoned her out of pride or cruelty. He had made himself a monster in her eyes just to force her out of a crosshair, sacrificing his own marriage to keep her breathing.

"You idiot," she sobbed, pressing her forehead against his fever-hot shoulder, wrapping her arms around his wounded chest. "You absolute, arrogant idiot. We are partners, Julian! You don't get to make me a martyr just to play the hero! Next time, you hand me a gun and we fight them together!"
