Chapter 14 - Checkmate in the Light

"You think you can walk into my gallery and threaten me, Montgomery?" Sterling snarled, recovering his composure as six of his armed syndicate operatives moved out of the crowd, forming a threatening semicircle around Julian and Clara. "This building is private property. I have twenty men armed with suppressed weapons surrounding this floor. I will kill you both right here and frame it as a robbery."

Clara laughed—a clear, fearless sound that genuinely shocked the surrounding high-society guests who were beginning to back away toward the walls, realizing that the glamorous art auction had just transformed into a war zone.

"You really don't understand how this works anymore, Alexander," Clara said smoothly, taking a step forward so she was the one standing in front of Julian, looking down her nose at the crime lord. "You think Julian is the only one you have to fight tonight?"

She reached into the silver clutch she carried, pulling out a slim digital remote control and pressing the central button.

Instantly, the massive 4K projection screens lining the upper walls of the Soho gallery—screens that had been displaying digital previews of the art pieces—flickered and changed.

The abstract paintings vanished. In their place appeared live, high-definition video feeds from inside Alexander Sterling’s private shipping warehouses in Newark, his illegal gambling houses in Queens, and his primary money-laundering banks in Manhattan.

On every screen, teams of federal SWAT agents from the FBI's Organized Crime Task Force, led by Gabriel and Julian’s tactical legal division, were seen battering down doors, seizing servers, and putting Sterling’s lieutenants into handcuffs.

"What is this?!" Sterling screamed, spinning around to look at the screens in horror as his entire life's work disintegrated before his eyes in real time. "Turn those screens off!"

"I spent two weeks in a restoration studio learning how to clean away layers of filth to reveal the truth beneath, Alexander," Clara said, her eyes flashing with triumphant, righteous fury. "While Julian was dismantling your bank accounts this afternoon, I personally delivered the decrypted ledger of your European arms trafficking network to the United States Attorney General's office. You aren't going to kill anyone tonight. You're going to spend the rest of your life in a supermax cell in Florence, Colorado."

Sterling’s eyes went wild with trapped, desperate rage. He reached under his tuxedo jacket, pulling a compact chrome revolver, aiming it directly at Clara’s chest. "I'll take you with me, you bitch!"

Before Sterling could even cock the hammer, Julian moved.

He didn't draw a gun. He stepped in front of Clara with blinding, protective speed, grabbing Sterling’s wrist and twisting it upward with a sickening snap of bone. The revolver discharged harmlessly into the high plaster ceiling. Julian slammed his forearm into Sterling’s throat, driving the syndicate leader hard into the polished concrete floor, disarming him instantly and pinning him under his boot.

Around the room, the six syndicate operatives drew their weapons—but before they could fire, the glass entrance doors shattered inward as two dozen heavily armed FBI tactical agents swarmed into the gallery, shouting orders and training assault rifles onto Sterling’s men.

"Drop your weapons! FBI! Get on the ground right now!"

Sterling’s operatives dropped their guns, raising their hands in surrender as they were pushed to the floor and cuffed.

Julian stepped off Sterling as the federal agents hauled the syndicate leader away in chains. He turned to Clara, his chest heaving, his black tuxedo slightly rumpled, his dark eyes fixed upon her with a look of such absolute, overwhelming adoration and respect that it took her breath away.

"Checkmate," Julian whispered, taking her hand and raising her knuckles to his lips in front of the entire, stunned assembly of Manhattan high society. "My brilliant, lethal wife."
