Chapter 5 - The Ripple Effect

While Julian was crying in a ditch, I was sitting in the VIP lounge of a first-class terminal in Seattle, sipping a mimosa. My phone buzzed. It was a frantic text from my mother, Eleanor.
CLARA! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE? JULIAN IS IN DANGER! CALL ME IMMEDIATELY!
I smiled, took a sip of my drink, and blocked her number.
The panic in the Vance household was just beginning. Because the loan sharks couldn't squeeze blood from a stone, they went after the next best thing: Julian’s co-signers. And who had arrogantly co-signed Julian’s massive luxury apartment and early business loans, assuming his golden boy could never fail?
Arthur Vance.
By Friday evening, the loan sharks didn't go back to the farm. They went directly to my parents' sprawling, $4 million estate in the wealthy suburbs of New York.
Arthur tried to use his usual intimidation tactics. He threatened to call the police, threatened to use his expensive lawyers. But Russo and his crew weren't corporate litigators. They were the criminal underworld. They parked black SUVs outside my parents' house 24/7. They followed my mother to her country club. They made it terrifyingly clear that if the $920,000 wasn't paid immediately, the Vance family would face physical consequences.
Desperate, Arthur tried to liquidate his assets. But here was the second part of my trap.
Years ago, when I was freezing in that shack, Arthur had forced me to do remote bookkeeping for his consulting firm to "earn my keep." I saw everything. I saw the offshore tax havens. I saw the inflated expenses. I saw the illegal commingling of funds.

Before I handed the farm over to Verdant, I compiled a massive, encrypted file of Arthur Vance’s financial crimes spanning five years. I anonymously mailed it to the IRS Whistleblower Office and the SEC.
When Arthur went to the bank on Monday morning to pull out a million dollars in cash to save his son's life, the teller looked at her screen, turned pale, and whispered, "I'm sorry, Mr. Vance. Your accounts have been frozen by federal order."
