Chapter 7 - The Trial

The courtroom was suffocatingly formal, smelling of polished wood and stale authority. Clara sat at the plaintiff's table, her hands folded tightly in her lap, wearing a sharp, professional suit. Beside her, Arthur sat like a sentinel, his presence radiating quiet power.
Across the aisle, Julian looked immaculate. He wore a custom navy suit, looking every bit the grieving, desperate father fighting for his son. He shot Clara a smug, confident smirk when the judge wasn't looking.
Julian’s lawyer rested his case after a blistering morning of character assassination against Clara. He had painted her as a gold-digger who had trapped Julian, hidden the baby, and then manipulated Julian’s elderly father to secure her financial future.
"The defense calls Julian Vance to the stand," Arthur's lawyer announced.
Julian walked confidently to the witness box, swearing to tell the truth. He looked at the judge with practiced, sorrowful eyes.
"Mr. Vance," Arthur's lawyer began, pacing in front of the box. "You claim you love your son. You claim you have spent the last ten months searching for him."
"Every single day," Julian lied flawlessly. "It broke my heart not being there for his birth."
"And your desire for custody has absolutely nothing to do with the stipulations of your late grandfather's five-hundred-million-dollar trust?" the lawyer asked sharply.
Julian chuckled, shaking his head. "I am a successful man on my own. I don't care about the money. I only care about Leo."
Arthur’s lawyer walked over to his table and picked up an evidence bag. Inside was the cheap burner phone.
Julian’s smug expression completely vanished. The color drained from his face, mirroring the exact look his father had worn in the delivery room ten months ago.
"Your Honor, we would like to submit Defense Exhibit 4," the lawyer said, his voice ringing through the silent courtroom. "A prepaid cellular device belonging to Mr. Vance, left at the plaintiff's residence. On it, we have recovered text messages detailing a premeditated plan to abandon Clara, return only to seize the child for financial gain, and then immediately exile the infant to a foreign boarding school."
"Objection!" Julian’s lawyer shouted, leaping to his feet. "This is fabricated evidence!"
"The IP addresses and cell tower pings have already been authenticated by a cyber-forensics expert, Your Honor," Arthur’s lawyer countered, handing a thick packet of data to the bailiff.
The judge read through the transcripts. The silence in the room grew heavy, oppressive, and lethal. The judge looked up from the papers, glaring at Julian with a mixture of absolute disgust and fury.
"Mr. Vance," the judge said, his voice dangerously low. "Did you write these messages?"

Julian looked at Clara. The mask of the charming, wealthy gentleman shattered. His eyes were wide, frantic, and filled with venom. "She stole that! That was private property!"
A collective gasp echoed through the gallery. In his rage, Julian had just confessed to the phone's authenticity.
