Chapter 1 - The Crescent Mark

Dr. Arthur Vance did not just cry; he shattered. This was a man who had delivered thousands of babies, a veteran of emergency surgeries and high-risk traumas, known for a heart rate that never spiked. But as he looked at the squalling, red-faced infant in the nurse’s arms, the clipboard slipped from his fingers, clattering loudly against the sterile linoleum floor.
Clara pushed herself up on her elbows, her exhaustion momentarily overridden by a spike of maternal panic. "What is it?" she gasped, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Is he sick? Is something wrong with my baby?"
Dr. Vance didn’t answer immediately. He took a staggering step forward, his hands trembling as he reached out to gently pull back the edge of the blue swaddling blanket. He wasn't looking at the baby's face, nor his fingers. He was staring directly at the infant’s left collarbone.
There, resting perfectly against the pale newborn skin, was a distinct, crescent-shaped birthmark, roughly the size of a thumbprint.
"My God," Dr. Vance whispered, the color completely washing out of his face. He looked up at Clara, his eyes red and brimming with unshed tears. "Who is the father of this child?"
Clara swallowed hard, defensive and terrified. "His name is Julian. Julian Vance. Why?"
A choked sob escaped the doctor’s lips. He gripped the edge of Clara’s bed to keep his knees from buckling. The nurses exchanged bewildered glances, completely unsure of how to handle the hospital’s most stoic surgeon breaking down in the middle of a delivery room.
"Julian," Dr. Vance breathed, the name carrying a decade of grief. "Julian is my son."
The monitor tracking Clara’s heart rate began to beep rapidly. The room spun. The man who had abandoned her in a cold apartment, the man who had erased himself from her life without a trace, was the son of the wealthy, esteemed chief of obstetrics standing right in front of her.
"He told me his family was dead," Clara whispered, the betrayal stinging her eyes.
"To him, we are," Arthur replied, his voice thick with sorrow. He reached out and gently touched the baby’s cheek. "He has the Vance mark. Julian had it. I have it. My father had it." He looked into Clara’s terrified eyes, his gaze hardening with a sudden, fierce protectiveness. "He left you, didn't he?"

Clara could only nod, the tears returning.
Arthur Vance straightened his posture, wiping the tears from his face. The grieving father was gone, replaced by a man of absolute resolve. "My son is a coward. But I am not. You are not alone anymore, Clara. I swear it."
