Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary

The Vance estate was a sprawling, gated property in the wealthy suburbs of Connecticut. It was a fortress of stone, manicured lawns, and security cameras. For Clara, who had spent the last nine months counting pennies to afford heating, it felt like stepping onto another planet.
Arthur gave her the entire East Wing. It was flooded with natural light, filled with fresh flowers, and equipped with a state-of-the-art nursery. For the first time since she saw the two pink lines on the pregnancy test, Clara felt a deep, profound sense of safety.
Weeks turned into months. Arthur proved to be an incredible grandfather. He reduced his hours at the hospital to spend afternoons walking Leo around the gardens. He set up a trust fund for the boy. More importantly, he treated Clara like a daughter. He listened to her dreams of one day opening her own artisan bakery, encouraging her to practice her recipes in his massive, chef-grade kitchen.
Slowly, the trauma of Julian’s abandonment began to fade. Clara was healing. The dark circles under her eyes vanished, replaced by the glowing confidence of a mother who knew her child was fiercely protected.
But true peace is fragile, especially when built on a foundation of secrets.
It happened on a Tuesday. Leo was six months old. Clara had driven into town to visit the bakery where she used to work, bringing a box of her newly perfected pastries for her old coworkers.
As she walked out to her car, the crisp autumn wind blowing through her hair, a figure stepped out from behind a parked van, blocking her path.
He was wearing a tailored Italian suit. His hair was perfectly styled, and his jaw was set in a sharp, arrogant line. He looked wealthier, colder, and far more dangerous than the man who had left his keys on her kitchen counter.

"Hello, Clara," Julian said, a sickening smirk playing on his lips. "I hear I'm a father."
Clara’s blood ran completely cold. The glass pastry box slipped from her fingers, shattering on the pavement.
