Chapter 18 - The Final Cleanse

Despite the idyllic home life, Clara knew Dante’s world would always carry risks. She decided she wasn't just going to be his protected wife; she was going to be his partner.

Clara started sitting in on Dante’s legitimate business meetings. Her time running the bakery had given her a sharp mind for logistics and numbers. Dante encouraged it, taking immense pride in her brilliance.

“We have an issue with the shipping union,” Dante’s CFO explained one morning. “They’re threatening to strike unless we increase their cut by ten percent. It’s a shakedown.”

Clara looked over the financial reports. She recognized the name of the union leader. It was a man who used to frequent Mario’s Bakery, a man who had notoriously stiffed his tabs and complained about costs.

“He’s bluffing,” Clara said, tapping the paper. “He runs a massive gambling debt. Look at these offshore wire transfers disguised as pension funds. If we freeze his union accounts and threaten an audit, he’ll fold by tomorrow.”

The CFO stared at her in shock. Dante leaned back in his leather chair, a slow, predatory grin spreading across his face.

“You heard my wife,” Dante said, his chest swelling with pride. “Execute the audit.”

By the end of the week, the strike was canceled. Clara had saved the company millions.

That night in bed, Dante pulled her on top of him, his hands tracing the curve of her spine. “You are becoming more dangerous than me, Mrs. Cavallo.”

“I learned from the best,” she smiled, resting her chin on his chest.

“I’m transitioning the last of the illegal operations to legitimate holdings,” Dante confessed quietly into the dark room. “By the end of the year, my hands will be entirely clean. No more rival wars. No more ambushes. I want our children to grow up safe.”

Clara’s heart fluttered. “Our children?”

Dante flipped her onto her back, hovering over her with a look of absolute worship. “I think Leo needs a sister.”
