Chapter 10 - Beatrice Strikes Back

The revelation in the kitchen changed everything. The invisible wall between them shattered, replaced by a simmering, electric tension. Dante began sleeping in the master suite with her, though he kept to his side of the massive bed, respecting her boundaries. But his protective streak only intensified.
Two weeks later, the peace was shattered.
Dante was at the office. Clara was helping Leo with his math homework at the dining table when the penthouse intercom buzzed.
“Mrs. Cavallo,” the lobby concierge said, his voice tense. “Child Protective Services is here. Accompanied by a police escort. They have a warrant to inspect the premises.”
Clara’s blood ran cold. Beatrice.
“Send them up,” Clara said, her voice shaking. She immediately dialed Dante. He answered on the first ring.
“They’re here,” Clara choked out. “CPS.”
“I’m on my way. Don't say a word until I get there,” Dante ordered, hanging up.
Three stern-faced social workers and two uniformed officers exited the elevator. Beatrice Jenkins stepped out behind them, a smug, venomous smile on her face.
“What is she doing here?” Clara demanded, pulling Leo behind her.
“I filed an anonymous tip regarding the safety of a minor in a known syndicate household,” Beatrice said smoothly. “As a concerned relative, CPS allowed me to accompany them to ensure the child’s safe removal.”
The lead social worker stepped forward. “Mrs. Cavallo, we have received allegations of illegal firearms, unsavory individuals, and a dangerous environment for the child. We need to inspect the home.”
Clara stood tall, channeling every ounce of Dante’s mafia-boss energy. “You may inspect the home. But if you touch my brother, I will have my lawyers sue you into oblivion.”
For an hour, they tore the penthouse apart. They found nothing. Dante’s home was immaculate. No weapons, no drugs, no trace of his underground empire.

Just as the social worker was writing up a clean report, the elevator doors chimed, opening with a terrifying finality. Dante stepped out.
And he brought hell with him.
