Chapter 1 - The Diagnosis

The frantic beeping of the heart monitor mirrored the sheer panic exploding inside Arthur’s chest. The neurologist, Dr. Evans, pressed a firm hand against Arthur’s shoulder, keeping him pinned to the mattress.

"Mr. Sterling, you need to breathe," Dr. Evans commanded, signaling for a nurse to adjust the IV drip. "Your spine sustained severe trauma in the crash. The swelling has caused significant nerve compression. Your inability to feel your legs is a condition we refer to as spinal shock."

"Spinal shock?" Arthur rasped, the words tearing at his dry throat. "Are you telling me I’m paralyzed?"

"I am telling you that it is too early to give a definitive prognosis," the doctor replied, his voice carefully neutral. "You’ve been in a coma for eighty-nine days. The fact that you are awake, lucid, and communicating is nothing short of a medical miracle. But your lower extremities are currently unresponsive. We will need to run immediate MRIs to assess the permanent damage."

Arthur closed his eyes, his brilliant mind racing past the physical agony. He remembered the winding road. He remembered stepping on the brake pedal and feeling nothing but loose air. He remembered the sickening crunch of metal, and the realization that his custom-built, heavily armored luxury sedan had been expertly sabotaged.

Someone had tried to kill him. And if they found out he was alive, trapped in a hospital bed without the use of his legs, they would absolutely finish the job.

Arthur opened his eyes. The panic was gone, replaced by the cold, calculating ruthlessness that had made him a billionaire.

"Doctor," Arthur said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "Who else knows I am awake? Who knows my real identity?"

"Just the staff in this room," Dr. Evans said. "We were about to contact the authorities and your corporate emergency contacts—"

"No," Arthur interrupted, grabbing the doctor's wrist with surprising strength. "You call no one. As of this exact second, Arthur Sterling is still missing. John Doe in Room 412 is still in a coma. If a single word of my recovery leaks to the press, or my family, you will not live long enough to regret it."
