Chapter 7 - The Desperate Pivot

The media fallout was instantaneous.

By Monday morning, the story was on the front page of every major business publication: Tech CEO's Bride Arrested at the Altar for $2.4M Fraud.

Julian’s board of directors held an emergency meeting at 8:00 AM. By 9:00 AM, Julian was officially ousted as CEO of the company he had built. His assets were frozen pending the federal investigation. He was locked out of his own penthouse.

But Julian was a narcissist, and narcissists never go down without a fight.

He showed up at my gated community on Tuesday afternoon, banging on the security gates until the guards threatened to call the police. I finally permitted him to enter, sitting opposite him on my back patio while Leo slept inside.

“Clara, I lost everything,” Julian pleaded, looking haggard and unshaven. “Elena is in federal lockup. They’re talking about ten years. My company is gone. I have nothing left.”

“Actions have consequences, Julian.”

“I’m sorry,” he wept. “I was a fool. I was obsessed with my legacy. But we can fix this. You have the baby. You’re a mother now. We can be a family. Drop the civil suit. Tell the feds I didn't know about the money. I’ll come back to you.”

I stared at him. He actually believed that after treating me like medical waste, he could just waltz back into my life because his shiny new toy was broken.

“Julian, I didn't expose Elena to win you back,” I said softly. “I exposed her to bury you both.”

“You’re keeping my son from me!” he snapped, his true, vicious nature surfacing again.

“I’m keeping my son safe from a man who measures human worth by utility,” I corrected. “Now leave my property, or I’ll have you arrested for trespassing.”
