Chapter 4 - The Heir Apparent

“Clara?” Julian breathed into the microphone.
I stepped out into the center aisle. I unbuckled Leo, lifted him gently into my arms, and began the long walk toward the altar.
“You invited me, Julian,” I said, my heels clicking rhythmically against the stone. “You told me to come see what a real woman looks like. You told me to come watch you become a father.”
I stopped ten feet away from the altar.
Elena was shaking. Her hands flew to her mouth.
Julian looked at the baby in my arms. He looked at the tuft of dark hair, the jawline, the undeniable genetic stamp on my son's face.
“Whose baby is that?” Julian demanded, his voice cracking, the microphone picking up his panic.
“His name is Leo Vance,” I said smoothly. “And according to the certified DNA test sitting in my purse, he is your biological son.”
The crowd erupted into gasps. Eleanor fainted in the front row.
“That’s impossible!” Julian yelled, his face turning purple. “The doctors said you couldn't! You never told me!”
“You didn't give me the chance,” I replied, my voice dropping to a dangerous calm. “You served me divorce papers the week I was supposed to take a new test. You packed your bags. You called me barren. You told me I was broken.”

“Julian, do something!” Elena shrieked, tugging on his tuxedo sleeve. “She’s ruining our wedding!”
“Oh, Elena,” I smiled, shifting Leo to my other hip. “I’m not here to ruin your wedding. I’m here to ruin your life.”
