Chapter 3 - The Vows We Break

The string quartet transitioned into the bridal chorus.
Julian stood at the altar, looking smug and triumphant in his custom tuxedo. He hadn't noticed me yet. His eyes were fixed on the beginning of the aisle.
Elena appeared. She was wearing a heavily beaded, custom designer gown that easily cost fifty thousand dollars—my fifty thousand dollars. Her stomach pushed against the fabric, a visible six-month bump. She looked radiant, victorious, and completely oblivious to the financial guillotine hovering above her head.
The ceremony was a masterclass in hypocrisy.
The officiant spoke about loyalty, about standing by one another through the darkest storms, and about the sanctity of family. Julian held Elena’s hands, staring into her eyes with a practiced sincerity.
“I promise to cherish you,” Julian said into the microphone, his voice echoing across the silent lawn. “To build an empire with you, and to protect the family we are starting today.”
I felt a cold laugh bubble up in my throat. I looked down at Leo. He was happily chewing on a soft toy, blissfully unaware that the man speaking was the father who had thrown his mother away like defective machinery.
“Elena, do you take this man?” the officiant asked.
“I do,” she smiled, her eyes crinkling with triumph.
The officiant turned to the crowd. “If anyone can show just cause why these two should not be lawfully joined, speak now, or forever hold your peace.”
It is the oldest cliché in the world. People never actually speak up.
But I wasn't just people.
I stood up.
My chair scraped loudly against the stone patio.
Four hundred guests turned around in unison. The silence that fell over the country club was so absolute you could hear the wind rustling the oak trees.

“I have a reason,” I said, my voice ringing out clear and steady.
Julian’s head snapped toward the back of the aisle. The smugness evaporated from his face, replaced by absolute, paralyzing shock.
