Chapter 8 - The Sentencing

The judge was a stern, uncompromising man who had no patience for white-collar criminals who threw their families under the bus to get ahead.

"Mark Davis," the judge's voice echoed through the silent room. "You violated the trust of your investors, your business partners, and your family. I sentence you to six years in federal prison."

Mark let out a muffled sob.

"Evan Miller," the judge continued, looking at the man who had ruined his own marriage. "For criminal negligence and accessory to fraud, I sentence you to three years."

Then, the judge looked at Chloe. Because she had cooperated late in the investigation, she avoided jail time, but the financial penalties were severe.

"Chloe Stevens. You are ordered to pay $250,000 in restitution. Your wages will be garnished until the debt is paid in full."

Chloe let out a wail, clutching her swollen belly. She had no college degree, no rich boyfriend, and a criminal record. She was going to spend the rest of her life paying for a lifestyle she never actually earned.

I stood up from the gallery, buttoned my coat, and walked out of the courthouse before the bailiffs even put the handcuffs on them.

I had nothing left to say to any of them.
