Chapter 5 - The Collapse of Mark

Mark tried to play hardball. He hired a sleazy, aggressive divorce attorney who immediately sent me a demand letter asking for half the house, half my pension, and spousal support, claiming I was the primary breadwinner.
We met in a sterile conference room in downtown Seattle. Mark looked smug, sitting across from me in a cheap suit, his lawyer flanked beside him.
"Mrs. Davis," Mark's lawyer began pompously. "My client is willing to settle this quietly. We won't touch your pension if you sign over the deed to the house and provide a lump sum of $200,000 to help him restart his life."
My attorney, a sharp-as-tacks woman named Diane, just laughed.
I opened my briefcase and pulled out the thick black binder.
"I'm not giving you a dime, Mark," I said. I slid a document across the table. "This is a sworn affidavit from your business partner, Evan. It details your embezzlement of company funds. And this..." I slid a second document forward, "...is a copy of the police report Evan filed this morning."
Mark's smug expression evaporated. He snatched the papers, his hands visibly shaking.
"Your startup is dead," I continued evenly. "Your investors are pulling out. Valerie, Evan’s wife, is representing the board of directors, and she has a personal vendetta to completely destroy you. If you fight me on this divorce, I will hand over the rest of the financial evidence Victor uncovered to the district attorney."
His lawyer looked at the papers, then looked at Mark. "Did you actually steal corporate funds?"
Mark couldn't speak. He just stared at the table.

"Sign the papers, Mark," I whispered. "Walk away with nothing, or go to federal prison. The choice is yours."
With a trembling hand, Mark picked up the pen.
