Chapter 9 - The Smear Campaign

With her legal options shrinking and her bank accounts frozen solid, Camille turned to the only weapon she had left: the court of public opinion. Over the next forty-eight hours, the city's tabloid blogs and high-society gossip websites exploded with leaked "anonymous" tips about the Sterling family feud.
I sat in my office with Arthur Pendelton, watching a local morning news broadcast on the wall monitor. A sleek, well-paid public relations spin doctor hired by Camille’s defense team was sitting on the studio couch, shaking his head with manufactured sadness.
"It is truly a corporate tragedy," the spin doctor said smoothly to the anchor. "Camille Sterling has worked tirelessly to modernize her father's firm, only to be ambushed by a jealous younger sister who has struggled with severe mental stability issues for years. Sydney Sterling is utilizing a manufactured injury to usurp control of a family legacy she didn't build."
Arthur slammed his fist onto the desk. "This is outrageous! They're painting you as a lunatic, Sydney! We need to release a press statement right now! Let's give the media the ER photos and the audio recordings!"
"No, Arthur," I said calmly, sipping my morning tea. "Let them talk."
"Why? If our clients believe this trash, they might start pulling their contracts out of abundance of caution!"
"Because every public statement Camille’s PR team makes is being recorded and analyzed by the U.S. Attorney’s office," I explained, turning my laptop screen toward him. "Look at the legal definitions of witness tampering and public defamation under federal bail conditions. By publicly attacking the character and mental competence of the primary witness in an ongoing felony fraud investigation, Camille is actively violating the terms of her release."

I smiled slightly, feeling the cool, analytical calm that had always been my greatest strength. "When you're fighting someone who thrives on drama, Arthur, you don't roll in the mud with them. You let them dig their own legal grave on live television, and then you hand the shovel to the judge."
Sure enough, before the morning broadcast had even concluded, Harrison Grant was already drafting an emergency motion to revoke Camille’s bond for systematic witness intimidation and public harassment.
