Chapter 1 - The Second Phone Call

The heavy footsteps in the hospital corridor stopped just outside my door. Two uniformed police officers stepped into the room, their hands resting near their utility belts as their eyes scanned the tense scene. But they weren't the ones who made Camille’s face drain of its remaining color.

Stepping into the room right behind the patrolmen was Harrison Grant—my late father’s bulldog general counsel and the senior partner at the city’s most ruthless corporate litigation firm. Beside him stood a woman in a sharp grey suit holding a thick leather briefcase, whom I immediately recognized as the firm’s chief forensic auditor.

"Sydney, are you all right?" Harrison asked, his voice cutting through the sterile hospital air like a blade. He didn't look at my mother or sister; his eyes were fixed entirely on my fractured arm and the bruising around my wrist.

"I will be, Harrison," I replied, my voice steady despite the throbbing ache in my bone. "Thank you for getting here so fast."

Camille took a step backward, her polished demeanor cracking. "What is he doing here? Eleanor, why is corporate counsel at the hospital?"

"Because your sister didn't just call the police," Harrison said, turning his cold, practiced gaze toward Camille. "Ten minutes before you attacked her in your mother's dining room, Sydney initiated an emergency executive override on the company’s internal servers. She flagged three million dollars in unauthorized offshore wire transfers originating from your executive terminal."

Eleanor gasped, pressing a hand to her pearl necklace. "Three million? Camille, what is he talking about?"

"She's lying!" Camille shrieked, her voice echoing off the tile walls. "Sydney is trying to steal the company from us! She attacked me when I confronted her about her paranoia!"

Dr. Thorne stepped smoothly between Camille and my hospital bed, folding his arms. "The physical evidence tells a very different story, Ms. Sterling. That grip pattern on your sister's arm requires significant, sustained mechanical force. It is consistent with an offensive assault, not self-defense."

Harrison nodded to the two police officers. "Gentlemen, as legal counsel for Sterling Logistics, I am formally reporting a multi-million-dollar corporate embezzlement scheme. And as an eyewitness to the immediate aftermath of this domestic assault, I suggest you take statements before anyone leaves this room."

Camille looked at the doorway, her eyes darting like a trapped predator's. She had expected a quiet family cover-up; instead, she was standing in the middle of a coordinated legal strike.
