Chapter 7 - The Father's Secret Vault

With my mother sitting in a holding cell awaiting arraignment for violating a protective order, Harrison Grant and I took a quiet drive across town to the First National Bank building. Before my father died, he had left a secondary, private safety deposit box under my legal name only—one that neither Eleanor nor Camille had ever known existed.

We sat in the private viewing room of the bank vault, the heavy stainless-steel box resting on the mahogany table between us. My good hand trembled slightly as I inserted the brass key Dad had bequeathed to me in his private letter.

I turned the lock and lifted the heavy lid. Inside sat a thick leather journal, three USB drives, and a handwritten letter addressed to me on Dad's personal stationery.

I unfolded the letter, my eyes tracing his familiar, sharp handwriting:

My dearest Sydney,

If you are reading this, it means my health has failed, and your sister has finally shown her true colors. I have watched Camille's greed grow for years, enabled by your mother's endless vanity. I knew that once I was gone, they would try to take everything from you, believing your quiet nature meant you were weak.

They never understood that you have my mind. Inside this box is the complete, unedited secondary ledger I kept during my final three years. It documents every early theft Camille committed while I was too sick to fight her publicly. I built this company for you to protect, Sydney. Do not let them destroy our life's work. Use the sword I've left you.

With all my love, Dad.

A single tear dropped onto the parchment, but I quickly wiped it away. I picked up the leather journal and opened it.

Line by line, date by date, my father had tracked over two million dollars in early embezzlement that Camille had concealed during his cancer treatments. She hadn't just started stealing after he died; she had been systematically draining the company while he was fighting for his life in hospital beds, accelerating his stress and ultimately hastening his death.

I looked up at Harrison, my jaw set like stone. "This proves pre-meditated fraud dating back three years. It upgrades her charges from standard corporate embezzlement to a complex RICO wire fraud scheme."

Harrison took one look at the ledgers and nodded grimly. "This isn't just a prison sentence anymore, Sydney. This is federal annihilation. We take this to the US Attorney today."
