Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

We sped back to the Harrison Medical Group building, ignoring several traffic laws along the way.
Nathan flashed his corporate investigator badge to bypass the front desk security.
We took the elevator directly to the executive floor, the doors opening to a surprisingly quiet hallway.
We marched straight toward Marcus Thorne's corner office.
I didn't bother knocking.
I pushed the heavy glass doors open to find Marcus hastily stuffing a laptop and several hard drives into a leather briefcase.
He looked up, genuine shock registering on his usually composed face.
"Emily," he recovered quickly, smoothing his tie.
"You are violating the terms of your suspension by being here."
"And you are violating federal law by embezzling five million dollars," I replied, stepping into the room.
Nathan closed the door behind us, locking it with a sharp click.
"I have no idea what you are talking about," Marcus scoffed, but his hands were trembling slightly.
"We have the screen recordings, Marcus," Nathan stated calmly.
"We know about the Cayman accounts, the phantom vendors, and the burner phone you used to impersonate me."
Marcus stopped packing, his eyes darting toward the secondary exit leading to the private executive elevators.
"You have nothing but illegally obtained digital files that will never hold up in court," Marcus sneered.
"Maybe," I countered, pulling out my phone.
"But Dr. Hart is currently on her way up here with the head of corporate security."
"Let us see how you explain the private jet itinerary to her."
Marcus’s polite facade finally shattered completely.
He lunged forward, grabbing a heavy bronze award off his desk, and swung it wildly toward Nathan.
Nathan dodged the blow, tackling the HR director to the floor.

The leather briefcase spilled open, sending encrypted hard drives skittering across the expensive carpet.
Just as Marcus managed to shove Nathan off him, the office doors burst open.
