Chapter 5 - The Inside Job

Nathan was parked down the street in an unmarked black sedan.

I slipped into the passenger seat and quickly relayed everything that had just happened.

"Marcus Thorne," Nathan mused, typing the name rapidly into his encrypted laptop.

"It makes perfect sense."

"As HR Director, he has access to everyone's personal files, schedules, and security clearances."

"He knew your family dynamics, he knew your sister was jealous, and he knew your mother was in debt."

"He manipulated them perfectly to get me out of the way," I agreed, clenching my fists.

"But how is he embezzling the money?" I asked.

Nathan brought up a complex spreadsheet filled with shell companies.

"He is creating phantom employees and fake medical suppliers."

"The company pays millions to these fake vendors, and Marcus funnels the money offshore."

"If you took the VP job and audited the vendors, you would have found the fake accounts immediately."

"So he framed me for corporate espionage to get himself appointed as the interim VP," I concluded.

"Once he has the position, he will just delete the fake vendor contracts and cover his tracks permanently."

We were running out of time.

Once Marcus wiped the servers, there would be no proof of his embezzlement.

There would only be the fake evidence planted in my office, which would send me to federal prison.

"We need a confession, or we need to catch him in the act of altering the financial records," I said.

Nathan smiled, a dangerous, calculating look in his eyes.

"Then we are going to give him a reason to panic."

May you like

"We are going to make him think the board of directors is freezing his offshore accounts."

It was time to play offense.
