Chapter 3 - The Vanguard Command

Vanguard Aerospace Headquarters was a sprawling fortress of glass and steel nestled into the mountainside. When the convoy passed through the heavily guarded gates, I felt my lungs expand for the first time in ten months.

I was escorted directly to the executive wing. There were no pitying looks here. There were no whispers about the "poor, pregnant widow." As I walked through the sliding glass doors into the main boardroom, a dozen high-ranking military officials and corporate executives stood up in unison.

"Director Vance," the CEO of Vanguard greeted me, extending his hand. "An honor. Project Aegis is already being fast-tracked for deployment in the Middle East."

For the next four hours, I wasn't a grieving wife. I was a commander. I stood at the head of the holographic table, breaking down the code I had written in the dark hours of the night. I explained the drone-routing algorithms, the encryption bypasses, and the fail-safes.

They listened with rapt attention. When the meeting adjourned, I was given the keys to a secure, bulletproof penthouse suite on the top floor of the Vanguard residential tower.

It was warm. It was safe. And as I laid on the massive, plush bed that night, feeling my son kick against my ribs, I looked out over the city lights.

"We did it, Michael," I whispered to the empty room, clutching his dog tags. "We brought them home."
