Chapter 2 - The Eviction

The Rangers moved with terrifying efficiency. While two of them escorted me to the warmth of the lead SUV, the other two walked straight into the house.

Julian, trying to salvage his fractured masculinity, puffed out his chest and stood in the doorway. "Now hold on a minute, you can't just come in here and—"

Captain Elias didn't even break his stride. He stepped directly into Julian's personal space, towering over the tech-bro by a full six inches. "Are you going to be an obstacle, son? Because the federal government has a very specific way of dealing with obstacles."

Julian wilted instantly, stepping aside.

Sitting in the heated leather seat of the SUV, I watched the chaos unfold through the tinted windows. My mother was frantically waving her hands, arguing with a Ranger who was impassively handing her a legal eviction notice drafted by Vanguard's billion-dollar legal team.

My father was on his phone, likely calling his lawyer, unaware that his lawyer was paid out of the very same trust fund I had just frozen.

General Thorne slid into the seat across from me. He poured a cup of hot black tea from a thermos and handed it to me. "Drink, Elena. You're ice cold. The medical team is waiting at the facility for a full prenatal checkup."

"Thank you, Marcus," I whispered, the heat of the tea seeping into my bones.

"Michael would be proud," the General said quietly. "He always said you were the smartest person in any room. The Aegis grid... it’s flawless. You bypassed the radar jamming that cost him his life. You're going to save thousands of boys with this."

Tears pricked my eyes, but I blinked them away. I wasn't going to cry. Not today.

Outside, Olivia was dragging designer suitcases into the snow, weeping hysterically as a Ranger locked the front door of the estate behind them. They were standing in the freezing driveway, entirely locked out of the luxury they had stolen from a dead man's sacrifice.

"Drive," I told the driver.

The convoy pulled out, leaving my family shrinking in the rearview mirror, standing in the cold they had tried to bury me in.
