Chapter 1 - The Dotted Line

The freezing morning air seemed to crystallize around us, suspended in a moment of absolute, shattering silence. General Marcus Thorne did not flinch. He did not look at my parents, who were clutching their robes in the snow, or my sister Olivia, whose mouth was opening and closing like a suffocating fish. He only looked at me.

He extended a heavy, matte-black titanium pen.

"The final transfer of intellectual property, Mrs. Vance," General Thorne said, his voice a low rumble that commanded the dawn. "As well as the immediate transfer of all Vanguard Aerospace security protocols to this property. Upon your signature, you are officially the Director of Innovation, and this estate falls under federal corporate protection."

My fingers were numb from the cold, but my hand was perfectly steady as I took the pen.

"What is going on here?" my father demanded, finally finding his voice. He took a step forward, his face flushed with a mix of confusion and inherent entitlement. "Who do you people think you are? You can't just roll onto my property—"

"Correction, sir," a voice cut like a whip. It was Captain Elias Vance—Michael’s former second-in-command, stepping out from the flank. His hand rested casually on his tactical vest. "This is Mrs. Vance's property. The deed was transferred to a blind trust upon your son-in-law's death, of which she is the sole executor. You are merely guests."

My father stopped dead in his tracks.

I pressed the pen to the thick, cream-colored parchment inside the DOD portfolio. I signed my name. Not the timid, grieving widow they had shoved into a basement, but the architect of the Aegis System. The woman who had just revolutionized military medevac protocols.

I handed the pen back. "It's done, General."

"Welcome to Vanguard," Thorne said, snapping the portfolio shut. He turned to the Rangers. "Pack the Director's belongings. Secure the perimeter."

"Wait, wait!" Olivia cried out, dropping her designer dog onto the snow. "Elena, what are they talking about? What intellectual property? You don't even have a job!"

I looked at my sister, taking in her cashmere loungewear and her terrified eyes.

"I didn't have a job, Olivia," I said softly. "I had a mission. Michael's mission. And now that it's complete, my first act as Director is to liquidate unnecessary liabilities." I looked at Captain Elias. "Captain, I want them out. All of them. By noon."
