Chapter 7 - Tears of the Entitled

He signed his name. Then my mother signed hers.
With three strokes of a pen, the empire they had built on lies and arrogance was officially mine.
I picked up the contract and handed it to Vance. “Execute it. Then freeze all their remaining corporate cards.”
“Sarah, please,” my mother begged, dropping her pride entirely. She looked pathetic. “Where are we supposed to live? You took the house. We have nothing.”
“I’m sure you can find a nice one-bedroom apartment,” I said, standing up and buttoning my suit jacket. “You can get jobs. Chloe can work retail. It builds character. Or, she can just take some Tylenol to deal with the stress.”
Chloe let out a sound that was half-scream, half-sob. “I hate you! You’re a monster!”
“I’m exactly what you made me,” I replied coldly. “I survived a war zone. You couldn't even survive a missed car payment.”
I turned and walked toward the glass doors.
“Sarah!” my father yelled, his voice cracking with utter despair. “You can't do this! We are your blood!”

I paused at the door, looking back over my shoulder. “Blood just means we share genetics, Dad. Loyalty means you show up when it matters. You chose a car over my arm. Now, I’m choosing my future over yours.”
I walked out of the boardroom, Vance right behind me. The sound of my parents' weeping was entirely muffled by the thick glass doors as they closed behind us.
