Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

By week three, the financial strangulation was complete.
Without the ability to siphon funds from their company—thanks to the freeze Aegis Holdings put on their assets—my parents’ lifestyle evaporated overnight. Their country club memberships were revoked due to bounced checks. The household staff quit when payroll failed to clear.
Leo called me from his new workshop, the sound of machinery humming beautifully in the background. “Sarah, Dad just called me. He asked if I still had Uncle Ray’s lathe. He wanted me to sell it and give him the cash to keep the lights on at the house.”
My grip on my phone tightened. “What did you tell him?”
“I told him I already sold it to help a veteran,” Leo said, a fierce edge to his voice I had never heard before. “He called me a useless disappointment and hung up.”
“Stay focused on the shop, Leo. I'm handling them.”
I ended the call and drove to Vance’s office. My arm was out of the sling now, the brace reduced to a discrete sleeve beneath my tailored blazer. I moved with full range of motion. I was stronger than I had been before the injury.
“They are out of time,” Vance announced as I walked in. “Your father has called an emergency board meeting for tomorrow morning. He is begging for a buyout to avoid federal bankruptcy and hide the fraud. He reached out to Aegis Holdings.”
I smiled. “Did Aegis reply?”
“We did,” Vance handed me a thick, leather-bound contract. “We offered to buy the company for pennies on the dollar, assuming all their debt, thereby saving them from immediate federal prison.”
“And the catch?”
“The catch is that the current CEO and CFO must resign immediately, surrender all equity, and sign over the deed to the Connecticut estate to cover the remaining discrepancies,” Vance smiled. “They’ll be left with nothing but the clothes on their backs. But they’ll stay out of a cell.”

“Will they sign it?”
“They have no choice. The meeting is at 9:00 AM tomorrow.” Vance looked at me. “Are you ready to meet your new employees, Madam CEO?”
