Chapter 3 - The Repo Man Cometh

The first strike happened on a Tuesday.
I was sitting in Vance’s office, sipping black coffee, watching a live feed from a private investigator we had hired to monitor the family estate.
On the screen, Chloe was marching down the driveway of my parents’ sprawling Connecticut mansion, dressed in designer yoga pants and oversized sunglasses, holding the keys to her beloved $120,000 Porsche.
But parked blocking the driveway was a heavy-duty tow truck.
“What is happening?” I asked Vance, leaning closer to the monitor.
“Aegis Holdings just called in the loan on the vehicle,” Vance said smoothly, typing on his laptop. “Since they used fraudulent corporate collateral to secure it, the loan is in default. We authorized an immediate repossession.”
We watched the silent feed as Chloe began screaming at the tow truck driver. She was wildly gesturing, stomping her feet like a toddler throwing a tantrum. My mother ran out of the front door in her silk bathrobe, holding a cell phone to her ear, looking absolutely frantic.
My own phone buzzed on the desk. It was my mother.
I let it ring three times before picking up. “Hello?”
“Sarah!” my mother shrieked. “Are you getting your military disability checks yet? We have an emergency! The bank made some ridiculous error and they’re trying to take Chloe’s car! Your father is furious, his accounts are frozen. We need you to wire us ten thousand dollars immediately so we can sort this out!”
I looked at Vance. He raised an eyebrow.
“Mom,” I said, forcing my voice to sound perfectly calm and slightly confused. “I don't have ten thousand dollars. I told you, I couldn't even afford my surgery. My arm is gone.”
“Oh, for God's sake, stop making this about you!” she snapped, the viciousness bleeding through her panic. “Your sister is having a panic attack! Just put it on a credit card! You owe us, we raised you!”
“I can't help you, Mom. Good luck with the bank.”
I hung up and blocked the number.

On the screen, the tow truck hauled the gleaming Porsche away. Chloe collapsed onto the manicured lawn, weeping uncontrollably.
“Strike one,” Vance murmured.
