Chapter 8 - The House of Cards Falls

The courtroom erupted.
Richard Sterling leaped to his feet, his face turning a violent shade of purple. "Objection! This is slander! Where did you get that?!"
"From your own garbage, Richard," Clara said loudly, her voice ringing clear across the courtroom. "You shouldn't underestimate the people who clean up your messes."
Judge Ramirez adjusted her glasses, rapidly flipping through the taped-together documents. Her eyes widened. She looked up at Richard, her expression turning into a mask of pure judicial fury.
"Mr. Sterling," the judge said, her voice dangerously quiet. "These ledgers detail cash transfers directly corresponding to the zoning approvals for the Elm Street block. Do you have an explanation?"
Richard’s lawyers were frantically whispering to him, trying to pull him back into his seat. But Richard’s arrogance got the better of him.
"They're forged!" Richard shouted. "That little rat faked them to keep her filthy house!"
"They contain your personal accounting signatures, Mr. Sterling," Marcus Vance noted mildly. "And I've already taken the liberty of forwarding copies to the District Attorney's office. I believe they are opening a federal fraud investigation as we speak."
Richard froze. The color completely drained from his face. He looked at the folder, then at Marcus, and finally, his eyes darted to the doors, as if calculating how fast he could run.
My mother, oblivious to the legal gravity of the situation, grabbed Richard’s arm. "Richard, do something! Tell them we're taking the kids!"
Richard ripped his arm away from her with violent disgust. "Shut up, Evelyn! You stupid woman, this is your fault! If you hadn't dragged me into this mess with your pathetic brood, she would never have found those papers!"
My mother recoiled as if she had been slapped. "Richard... what are you saying? Our baby..."
"I don't care about the baby!" Richard snarled, his true, monstrous face fully revealed in open court. "I just needed your signature to bypass the marital hold on the deed!"
The silence in the courtroom was absolute. My mother sat there, her mouth open, the illusion of her wealthy, perfect rescue completely shattered. She had abandoned us for a man who viewed her as nothing more than a real estate loophole.
Judge Ramirez banged her gavel so hard it echoed like a gunshot.
"Bailiff," the judge commanded. "Detain Mr. Sterling. He is a flight risk pending federal investigation."

Two armed bailiffs moved in, grabbing Richard by the arms. As they hauled the millionaire out of the courtroom in handcuffs, I looked at Clara.
She wasn't smiling. She was just holding Leo, crying silent tears of absolute, overwhelming relief.
