Chapter 4 - The Darkness

Richard Sterling was a man of his word.
At 6:00 AM on Wednesday, the lights flickered and died. The hum of the ancient refrigerator ground to a halt. When I turned the kitchen faucet, the pipes shuddered, spitting out a few rusty drops before running completely dry.
He had pulled his strings with the city. The utilities were legally shut off due to "unsanitary structural concerns" cited by a corrupt inspector Sterling had undoubtedly bribed.
I found Clara in the kitchen, staring at the dead faucet. Her shoulders were slumped, the weight of the world pressing down on her thin frame.
"It's okay, Clara," I whispered, wrapping my arms around her waist.
Before she could answer, there was a commotion outside.
I looked out the window and gasped. A massive, roaring pickup truck was backing into our driveway. Chuck the mechanic hopped out, dragging a heavy, industrial-grade diesel generator behind him. Behind him was Mrs. Higgins, pushing a grocery cart loaded with five-gallon jugs of purified water.
Within an hour, Chuck had the generator hooked up to our main breaker. The lights surged back to life. The fridge hummed. Maria arrived with portable camping stoves and enough propane to cook for a month.
"He thinks he can freeze us out?" Chuck laughed, wiping grease from his forehead. "I've kept engines running in sub-zero blizzards. This is child's play."
That night, the house felt like a strange, magical campsite. The kids didn't know we were in a legal war; they just thought we were having an adventure. Ben and Chloe built a massive pillow fort in the living room. Toby read comic books by the light of a camping lantern.
Clara sat by the window, watching the street. The generator hummed loudly, a mechanical heartbeat keeping us alive.
"He's trying to break us before the court date," Clara murmured to me as I sat beside her. "He wants me to give up. He wants me to look at the cold and the dark and surrender the kids to the state."
May you like
"But you won't," I said fiercely.
Clara turned to me, her eyes blazing with a ferocious, unbreakable light. "No. I won't. I will burn this house down with my bare hands before I let them separate you."
