Chapter 6 - The Trash and the Treasure

The next night, I was awake at 2:00 AM. I couldn't sleep. The anxiety of the upcoming court date was eating me alive.

I crept into the kitchen for a glass of water and found Clara sitting at the table. It was covered in crumpled, grease-stained papers, receipts, and torn documents. She was meticulously taping them together, her brow furrowed in intense concentration.

"Clara? What are you doing?" I asked.

She looked up, her eyes wide with exhaustion and adrenaline. "Sterling fired me, but he forgot I still have the master key to the diner. And he forgot that he uses the diner's back office for his real estate meetings because he thinks it's off the grid."

I walked over. The papers were covered in financial ledgers, municipal zoning maps, and bank transfer receipts.

"What is all this?"

"Trash," Clara said, a grim smile spreading across her face. "I've been going there at midnight for the last three days and digging through his dumpsters. He tears everything up, but he doesn't shred it. He's too arrogant to think anyone would check."

Clara pointed to a taped-together ledger. "He didn't just buy our deed, sweetie. He’s been buying up the whole block through shell companies. But look here." She pointed to a column of numbers. "These are bribes. Cash payouts to the city zoning commissioner to reclassify our residential street as commercial. It's highly illegal. If this gets out, his entire development deal collapses, and he goes to federal prison."

My jaw dropped. My nineteen-year-old sister, who had spent the last year wiping noses and scrubbing floors, had just unraveled a multi-million dollar real estate conspiracy with a roll of scotch tape.

"What are we going to do with it?" I asked.

"We are going to give it to Marcus Vance," Clara said, gathering the papers into a thick folder. "And we are going to drop a bomb on them in court."
