Chapter 5 - The Masterstroke
Judge Vance let out a slow, heavy breath through his nose, shaking his head with profound disgust.
"Liquidity optimization," the judge repeated, the words dripping with heavy sarcasm.
"Mr. Vance, those municipal development bonds were secured against your wife’s family inheritance trust—a trust protected by ironclad state statutes that strictly prohibit external corporate leveraging."
Richard Sterling turned to Marcus in absolute disbelief, his eyes wide with fury.
"You told me those bonds were your personal liquid capital!" Sterling hissed loudly enough for half the gallery to hear.
"You lied to your own legal counsel about the origin of the funds!"
Panic broke out at the opposing table.
Chloe slumped back in her chair, her manicured hands flying up to cover her mouth as the devastating realization hit her like a freight train.
The sprawling estate in Oak Creek, the luxury vehicles, the high-society status, the venture capital empire—it wasn't just gone; it was legally attached to a multi-million-dollar criminal fraud investigation.
And Marcus had just signed his name to the sole liability waiver accepting 100% of the blame.
I remained completely motionless, watching the magnificent collapse of their arrogant dream with a cold, serene satisfaction.
Jonathan Hayes stepped forward once more, addressing the bench with absolute professional poise.
"Your Honor, in light of Mr. Vance’s open admission on the record, and pursuant to the newly entered addendum signed and acknowledged by both parties moments ago, we formally request the immediate dissolution of the marriage."
"Furthermore," Jonathan added, pulling a secondary document from his briefcase.
"We move for an emergency asset freeze on all personal and corporate accounts associated with Marcus Vance, pending criminal indictment by the state attorney general's office for financial fraud and embezzlement."
Judge Vance didn't hesitate for a single second.
He picked up his heavy mahogany gavel and brought it down with a sharp, echoing crack that sealed their fate.
