Chapter 3 - The Hidden Clause

Judge Vance rested his chin on his steepled fingers, fixing his sharp gaze upon my attorney.
"State the nature of the addendum, Mr. Hayes," the judge instructed.
Jonathan opened the manila folder and extracted a single, tightly typed sheet of parchment paper bearing a heavy crimson seal.
"Your Honor, during the course of the pre-trial discovery phase, my office uncovered a series of complex, cross-collateralized asset transfers executed under corporate seal without my client's knowledge or consent," Jonathan explained clearly, his voice carrying effortlessly across the quiet courtroom.
"These transactions involved the shifting of primary residential deeds and venture capital accounts into offshore holding entities."
Marcus whipped his head around to stare at Jonathan, his color draining rapidly as the first wave of genuine panic hit his system.
He leaned across the table toward his attorney, whispering frantically, his teeth bared in an angry grimace.
Richard Sterling stood up abruptly, slamming his palm down onto the table.
"Objection, Your Honor!" Sterling shouted, his face flushing a bright, furious crimson.
"This is an absolute ambush! These corporate restructuring moves were standard business operations executed within the bounds of Mr. Vance's sole proprietorship rights, completely unrelated to marital property division!"
Judge Vance raised a single, commanding hand, silencing the defense attorney instantly.
"Mr. Sterling, you will lower your voice in my courtroom," the judge warned, his tone freezing the air in the room.
"Furthermore, Mr. Hayes has merely stated an addendum for the record. He has not yet motioned for a contest. Proceed, Counselor."
Jonathan offered a polite, professional nod toward the bench.
"Thank you, Your Honor," Jonathan resumed, his eyes sweeping across the gallery before landing directly on Marcus.
"To ensure absolute legal clarity and to prevent any future civil liabilities from haunting either party, we have drafted a comprehensive waiver and indemnification clause."
Jonathan walked forward and handed the document directly to the court bailiff, who carried it up to the judge's bench.
"This clause explicitly states that Mr. Marcus Vance assumes one hundred percent of all legal, financial, and criminal liabilities associated with any undisclosed corporate entities, unrecorded loans, and foreign tax obligations tied to his recent business ventures."
Chloe gripped Marcus’s arm tightly, her whisper sharp and frantic.
"What does that mean? What liabilities?" she hissed under her breath.
Marcus waved her off dismissively, his bravado quickly returning as he convinced himself it was just standard legal posturing.

"It means nothing, Chloe," Marcus muttered back loud enough for the microphone to catch.
"He's just trying to save face. Sign the damn papers so we can take the house."
