Chapter 1 - The Heavy Oak Doors

The heavy oak doors of Family Courtroom 302 swung inward with a low, hollow groan that seemed to echo straight through the marrow of my bones.
Marcus stepped across the threshold first, his stride confident, his posture inflated with the arrogant certainty of a man who believed he had outsmarted destiny.
Chloe followed closely at his shoulder, her emerald wool coat swishing against the polished parquet floor like the tail of a triumphant predator closing in on a wounded deer.
I paused on the threshold for a brief, single second, letting my gaze sweep over the high-ceilinged room before walking in.
It was a standard municipal chamber, smelling faintly of old floor wax, damp wool coats, and recycled air from the vents overhead.
The gallery was surprisingly packed for a routine Tuesday morning docket, filled mostly with local attorneys, court-appointed mediators, and idle spectators drawn by the notorious reputation of the presiding judge.
Judge Arthur Vance sat at the elevated mahogany bench, his expression etched from granite, his half-moon spectacles perched low on a sharp nose as he reviewed a thick stack of preliminary briefs.
My lead counsel, Jonathan Hayes, stood smoothly from the defense table on the left, his silver hair catching the fluorescent glare, his posture relaxed yet intensely alert.
He gave me an almost imperceptible nod as I walked down the aisle.
Marcus and Chloe slid into the opposing table on the right, their heads immediately ducking together in a hushed, conspiratorial whisper accompanied by suppressed snickers.
I took my seat beside Jonathan, resting my hands carefully over my swollen stomach.
A heavy silence settled over the chamber as the bailiff rapped his knuckles against the wooden railing.
"All rise for the Honorable Judge Vance," the bailiff bellowed, his voice bouncing off the high walls.
We all stood.
Judge Vance did not immediately look up from his papers; instead, he let the silence stretch for a long, uncomfortable moment before settling his deep, evaluating eyes upon the three of us.
"Be seated," the judge commanded, his voice rumbling like distant thunder.

The legal war for the Vance estate, the corporate holdings, and our entire future had officially commenced.
Neither Marcus nor Chloe had the slightest inkling that the foundation they were standing on was entirely built upon quicksand.
