Chapter 1 - The Ghost's Debt

The freezing winter wind whipped aggressively across the snowy driveway, biting sharply into my exposed skin.
I stared completely paralyzed at the second piece of cream-colored paper tightly clutched in Carol’s manicured hand.
The driveway security lights cast long, distorted shadows across the freshly fallen snow, making my mother-in-law look like a terrifying phantom.
My late father, a hardworking mechanic who had saved every penny he ever earned, had been dead for over two years.
He was a gentle, honest man who would have absolutely despised the arrogant, deceitful people standing in front of me right now.
"What exactly is that, Carol?" I demanded, my voice trembling violently from a toxic mixture of the freezing cold and boiling, unadulterated rage.
Carol stepped confidently off the porch, her expensive velvet green dress dragging carelessly through the wet, dirty slush.
She held the piece of paper out toward me with a sickening, triumphant smile plastered across her perfectly powdered face.
"It is an itemized invoice for the extensive financial consulting services Ben provided to your father before he passed away," Carol stated coldly.
Ben flinched visibly beside her, his shoulders slumping as he stared down at his expensive leather shoes.
"My father never hired Ben for anything, and he certainly never asked for his worthless consulting advice," I fired back immediately.
Carol’s eyes narrowed into terrifying, venomous slits as she aggressively shoved the paper closer to my chest.
"Your father verbally agreed to a five percent management fee for his entire retirement portfolio, which currently amounts to sixty-two thousand dollars," she lied smoothly.
I looked directly at my husband, the man I had blindly trusted and financially supported for the past five years of our marriage.
"Did you actually forge a fake contract against a dead man to steal my inheritance?" I asked him, my voice dropping to a dangerous, lethal whisper.
Ben refused to make eye contact with me, his cowardice practically radiating off his shivering body in the freezing night air.
"It wasn't stealing, Sarah, it was just a temporary reallocation of assets to help the business stay afloat," Ben mumbled pathetically.
Oliver squeezed my hand tightly, his small, eight-year-old body trembling violently from the cold and the terrifying tension in the air.
I realized in that exact moment that I was not just dealing with entitled, greedy in-laws, but with highly organized, remorseless criminals.
Without saying another word, I slapped the fraudulent bill out of Carol's hand, sending the expensive cream-colored paper fluttering into a dirty snowbank.
I turned my back on them and marched directly toward my SUV, pulling Oliver safely along with me.
"If you drive away right now, I will officially finalize the refinancing documents tomorrow morning and completely drain the equity!" Ben shouted desperately.
I unlocked the car doors with my key fob, buckled Oliver into the backseat, and aggressively started the engine.

As I pulled out of the driveway, I looked in the rearview mirror and saw Carol screaming at Ben in the swirling snow.
The war for my family's financial survival had officially begun, and I was going to completely destroy them.
