Chapter 7 - The Trap

The assassination attempt forced the district attorney to accelerate the trial.
We were placed under heavily armed police protection.
I refused to cower in a safe house; I wanted James to know he failed.
Mark visited us with critical information from his ongoing investigation.
“The hitman dropped a burner phone in the stairwell,” Mark told us.
“The police decrypted it. The payment for the hit came from a shell company.”
“Let me guess,” I sighed. “A company registered in my name?”
“No,” Mark smiled. “A company registered in Eleanor’s name.”
Even from jail, his mother was pulling strings to protect her golden boy.
“We can use this to break them,” I said, a plan forming in my mind.
“James thinks he is in control because he relies on his mother's loyalty.”
“If we make him believe Eleanor flipped on him to save herself, he will panic.”
I asked my attorney, Sarah, to leak a rumor to James's defense team.
The rumor was simple: Eleanor had signed a full plea deal implicating James in everything, including the hitman.
In reality, Eleanor was refusing to speak to the police.
But James didn't know that.
We waited anxiously for the bait to be taken.
Two days later, Sarah called me with a triumphant tone.
“It worked,” she laughed.
“James just demanded an emergency meeting with the DA.”
“He is throwing his mother under the bus to save his own skin.”
He had given them the locations of two more illegal clinics just to spite her.

The family loyalty was officially destroyed.
They were devouring each other, just as I had hoped.
